{FOOD} Smoothie Recipe Blueprint

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I love smoothies; because when done right smoothies are, like, the best thing ever.

People ask me ALL. THE. TIME. What’s the best smoothie recipe? And I couldn’t think of just one if I tried; because, frankly, when you use the smoothie recipe blueprint, every smoothie is the best smoothie.

So what’s the blueprint? It simple, really; and I GUARANTEE that if you use this, delicious smoothies are in your future!

LIQUID

Every smoothie requires liquid, it’s the heartbeat of a smoothie. And you can use whichever liquid you’d like, water, milk, coconut milk, almond milk, hemp seed milk etc.

PRO TIP: if you don’t have nut milk but you have nuts, add the nuts to your smoothie and use water as your liquid. The nuts and water will create the “milk” in this smoothie.

FRUIT

Unless you are trying to be gangster, you’re going to want fruit in your smoothie. Sure, vegetables are all good, and they should be in your smoothie; however, some sweetness will go a long way to making your smoothie, the best smoothie.

Banana is a common addition, but I hate banana, so you’ll rarely see it in my smoothies; with that being said, any fruit plays well in a smoothie. If you like it, put it in your smoothie- it is after all your drink.

NOTE: if using banana, peach, mango, papaya and the like, omit the sweetness of dates or honey; these fruits are sweet enough.

VEGETABLE

You can get creative with which vegetables you use, but frankly a lot of veggies don’t really have a place in a smoothie. With that said, some unlikely veggies find a lovely home in a smoothie- beets, cooked sweet potato, spinach, kale, cucumber, pumpkin, carrots, chard and more!

BE CAREFUL: if you don’t have a high powered blender, like a Blendtec or Vitamix, you want to steam your harder veggies until soft; or else you’ll beat the shit out of your blender and have nothing but a chunky smoothie to show for it.

TEXTURE

If you know me, you know that I am a texture person, and smoothies require a smooth texture. Thin smoothies are for the birds, people!

Texture can come from a lot of places, avocado, yogurt (plant based or otherwise), banana, nuts, seeds, beans, protein powder and even tofu.

TIP: chia seeds are an excellent addition to your smoothie, however, you’ll want to drink that smoothie right away

FLAVOUR

As you would season a savoury dish with salt, pepper and spices, you do the same with a smoothie. Vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, honey, dates and herbs act as the seasoning in your smoothies.

Sure you can create a smoothie without flavourings, but I promise it will NOT be the best smoothie recipe you ever make- and isn’t that why you’re reading this?

BLEND

You’ll, of course, need to blend all this up. Now, if you’re wanting to go IN on the smoothie making, get yourself a good blender. I use a Blendtec and I have religiously for years, but Vitamix is great, and the Ninja boasts some amazing power as well; but if you’re just dipping your toes in and getting started, a Magic Bullet or Nutribullet will suit you just fine!

As with any recipe or culinary creation, testing is essential. You may try tofu in a smoothie and hate; or you may add too much basil the first go round. Don’t get discouraged, tomorrow is another opportunity to make smoothie magic.
