If you follow me on Instagram then you are well aware of my matcha addiction; and, although, Instagram often tells half the story, this fact is 100% true.

But I get SO. MANY questions about how to make it taste delicious, because when just mixed with water, although SUPER HEALTHY, it leaves much to be desired as far as taste. But FEAR NOT, I will help sort out all your needs.

Matcha 101: Which Should I Buy

I’ve spoken about this in an earlier post, but I want to reiterate, your chosen brand should be HIGH QUALITY; but what does that mean?

Food Grade– there are food grade matcha’s and ceremonial grade. I’ll give you the hot tip of the moment, ceremonial grade isn’t necessary- unless, of course, you are hosting a tea ceremony; ceremonial grade is costly, and if your intent is just to drink it (no ceremonial fanfare), food grade is fine.

My brand of choice is Matcha Ninja they are Canadian and VERY transparent about their sourcing, all of which mean a lot to my buying practices. I highly recommend them BUT whatever you do, DO NOT just buy some random tin of matcha, because not all matcha is created equal.

You’ve been warned.

How Do I Make my It Taste Delicious

I wanted to share two recipes with you today that are essentially just riffs on my original matcha recipe.

Turmeric Matcha Latte

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp Matcha Powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp raw honey

In a pot bring the coconut milk, water, turmeric, cinnamon and honey to a boil. Reduce heat and sift in the matcha powder and use a whisk to incorporate. And serve hot. Or cool and pour over ice.

NOTES: turmeric doesn’t taste like curry (it’s an element of curry powders) but it is to be used gingerly, because if you add too much this will NOT be delicious.

Chocolate Matcha Latte

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp Matcha Powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp raw honey

In a pot bring the coconut milk, water, turmeric, cinnamon and honey to a boil. Reduce heat and sift in the matcha powder and use a whisk to incorporate. And serve hot. Or cool and pour over ice.

NOTES: the cocoa is an enhancement, so this isn’t going to be a chocolate bomb; but if you’re looking for, said, chocolate bomb, add 1 TABLESPOON instead of 1 TEASPOON.
